Kingdoom

The brainchild of Cold Lake, Alberta native Alex Varughese, Kingdoom began in the early ’00s. The former Sugakane and Vela frontman was now winning awards with one of Edmonton’s best blues groups in Jimmy & The Walkers and dabbling in a quasi rock/reggae outfit under the label of Lex Justice.

He added the industrial metal-based Kingdoom to his list of ongoing projects, and assembled a band that consisted of guitarist Aaron Skiba, Tom Lincoln on bass, and drummer Greg Williamson (ex of Tupelo Honey).

Justice went to LA to record and mix some material with Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson), and the result was the self-titled debut album. Loud and proud with tracks like the lead-off “Quit,” “Holy Referee”, and “Fall of A King,” it got the critics’ attention for the studio work, as well as the versatility and song writing. It won the Metal Recording of the Year at that year’s Edmonton Music Awards, and fuelled dates across Canada, with Vrenna sitting in on drums for some of the dates.

In between solo shows as Lex Justice and still keeping the blues thing going on the side, it was back to LA for Varughese in the spring of 2014, and the follow-up STAND UP CHAMELON was on the shelves in time for a Halloween CD release party. Vrenna was back assisting in the studio, and critics hailed the album for its progression from the first record. Tracks like “Hate Is Love,” “Drug Dealah,” and the cover of “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” were mixed with subtle reggae vibes, and the socially conscious “Kill For Fun” had a definite and exotic Middle Eastern flavour.

The record got extensive airplay in pockets in the US as well as in Canada, and they again found themselves on the road for the next year or so. They also picked up the nod for Heavy Metal Album of the Year at the Edmonton Music Awards for the second straight year.

Varughese was asked to pick up the bass and join Econoline Crush for a series of shows in 2015, which led to him joining the group full-time.
