CD review: Corey Van Denheuvel
By: Dan Brisebois

Corey Vandenheuvel’s self-titled debut is a refreshing assortment of instrumental gems. This teenage Ontario native has already turned heads and carved a name for himself while winning numerous music festival awards.

His love for, and influence from classic rock is evident, and you can detect hints of some of his mentors, which include Stevie Ray, Jimi, Zakk Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani. His diverse creativity on this all-originals 3-song demo shines through, and gives you the sense all isn’t lost as far as actual ‘musicians’ go on the Canadian scene.

“Love Story” leads off on this energetic effort, and Vandenheuvel’s progressive style gives you a hint of much bigger things to come. “Radiant Skies” showcases his soothing passion, and “Slide Thing” is ode to a simpler time that kicks into a high gear slide groove extravaganza.

There’s nothing but bright lights on his horizon, and his debut is no doubt only a glimpse at this potential star’s future.
